Endoro Gate to Elephant Caves and Waterfalls
Just a short drive from the Highview Hotel leads to the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Endoro Park Gate. From here forested slopes lead from about 1600m to the Crater Rim at about 2400m. The lower slopes have been opened up to walkers - a well-made up path leads through beautiful forest scenery to a fine waterfall overlooking the plains below and the Highview Hotel, just beyond are caves carved out of the hillside by elephant and other animals in search of minerals. This is an interesting walk and possible year round. Many opportunities for bird-watching and observing the rich flora. Occasionally other animals such as monkeys may be seen however larger animals tend to move away. Walkers are accompanied by an armed ranger, many of whom are very knowledgable. Allow 4 hours for the round trip.
Endoro Gate to Crater Rim
The good path described above terminates at the elephant caves. Beyond this point it is possible to continue to the Crater Rim following buffalo and elephant trails up the forested slopes. This is a very fine,walk but is quite long and the going can be a bit difficult in places. Generally two armed rangers will accompany you and they will often have to cut their way through vegetation where the path has become overgrown. The walk takes at least 6 hours and a good pair of walking boots and lightweight cotton trousers are recommended as protection against the vegetation.
From the Crater Rim (where there are spectacular views over the Crater) the drive back to Highview takes about 1h 30mins. It is also possible to continue to a lodge overlooking the Crater, Simba Campsite on the Crater Rim or to Nainokanoka Campsite in the heart of the Crater Highlands.
